Barbecue

Site #54

Thought to be Fred Smith's first sculpture, the Barbecue was inspired by the 1948 World Series, in which the Cleveland Indians defeated the Boston Braves. This event supposedly motivated Smith to build his Barbecue for a big celebration. The Barbecue combines rock and mortar techniques while Smith was familiar with after having built his own tavern, with bas-relief sculpture and portraiture seen in the two Indian profiles.
