This tableau describes the early history of how land in the region was organized by a succession of European immigrants: Smith said, "All virgin timber was owned by big lumber companies. It was not available to buy land until all the timber was logged off. It was sold after that for a little money...The two big men here shown riding the horses. They were called stump farmers..." Six male figures surround the stump farmers, forming an impressive monument to the enormous task of transforming clear-cut land into farmland - a continuation of the logging history represented south of this area.
