Iwo Jima Plaque

Site #39

Originally this plaque stood near the south side of the tavern. The composition was borrowed from what is thought to be the most reproduced photo in history. On February 23rd, 1945 Joe Rosenthal, an Associated Press photographer, snapped his famous picture of the Marines raising an American flag on Mount Suribachi, on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. The war was not over, but the image signaled victory and quickly became an enduring symbol of the struggle for freedom and democracy in World War II.
