Lincoln-Todd Monument
Site #57
Prior to building the Lincoln-Todd Monument, Smith must have visited or seen a picture of the statue of Abe and Mary Todd Lincoln in Racine, WI, designed by Chicago sculptor Frederick C. Hibbard. This granite monument is typical of traditional, representational public sculpture. Raised on a base, the figures are carefully composed, with Abraham seated and Mary standing, balancing the considerable difference of their heights. Smith acknowledged the sculptor and the accomplishment with a sign announcing "The Second Monument of its kind in the U.S.A." on the base of his statue of the historic couple.
