Fred Smith would occasionally describe Mr. Knox as Daniel Boone. The figure's glass encrusted stocking cap became Boone's legendary coonskin cap, because he said so. Once built, Smith's sculptures had flexible identities. They could represent anything that the artist happened to be thinking about, in addition to what they were originally built to represent.
